RTW_Logo_color_3inch_sm

even though i work from home, i rode to work today… normally i would take the bike around the block in the spirit of the day. but this morning, i picked up my bike from the dealership, so i really did get to ride to work…

quick update...

things have been busy here and more details coming...

off the heels of my last post - the trip to york was indeed interesting and fun... more to come when i have a chance to get the pics uploaded.

last weekend was smoke out 9. wasn't sure what to expect, but turned out to be a great event. new and much better venue... again, will post more when i get the pics uploaded.

looking forward, have million mile monday coming up... it's hog's attempt to get as many members to ride and tally up a total of one million miles. not sure where i'll ride, but planning on doing some tooling around...

july brings up ride to work day... not sure if i'll ride or where i'll go... can't even remember if i went out last year...

seems like there's other stuff, but can't remember right now... stay tuned for updates...

riding again...

well, it's been longer than i expected since i rode the bike... didn't take it out on ride to work day. i didn't really have any place to go, so i didn't go anywhere. last sunday i did the usual ride to the store to pick up the paper, but that was about it...

today i decided to ride to lunch to meet john q. public and a couple other cohorts. it was a nice ride out and back. i took the interstate on the way out because, as usual, i didn't leave early enough to take the longer route. and because i'm not really sure how much more time the longer route takes. i've tried to keep track of how long it takes a couple times, but i get lost in the ride too much to pay attention to the time. but i made up for it on the ride home - taking the longer route. i don't really know if it's longer distance-wise, but it's certainly longer time-wise because i'm on two lane roads the whole way. and i'd rather be on those roads.

the temps were a little warm out there. it's not bad if you can keep moving, but if you stop in traffic, it can get a bit warm under that full face helmet and riding jacket. in my head, i've debate not wearing the jacket on the warm (hot) days - comfort v. safety. so far safety has always won out (at least since i've purchased the jacket). when you do a pro/con approach to it, it just makes sense to wear the jacket. what's the worst that can happen wearing the jacket?? sweating?? what's the worst that can happen not wearing a jacket?? road rash?? (not to mention death if the rash is bad enough!!!) so i think i've convinced myself to continue wearing it - even in the heat. i guess it just makes me feel better riding, and i can deal with the sweat.

soooo, lunch was good. it's always nice catching up to the people that i should see more often but don't. working from home has a lot of advantages, but it does come with a couple disadvantages. like not seeing friends as much. but don't get me wrong, the disadvantages certainly don't outweigh the advantages. you just have to make adjustments to minimize the disadvantages.

well, that's about it for now... should have more to post after tomorrow as i'm going to observe a motorcycle class. one of the doods i took the prep course with is teaching. it will be a good chance for me to figure out where the range is, see how things are run and meet some of the other instructors. i'm looking forward to it...

ride to work day - tomorrow!!!

ride to work...

as mentioned in an earlier post, tomorrow is ride to work day... you can check out more at the ride to work web site.

since i work from home, it makes it kind of hard to ride. my wife said i should ride to the end of the driveway, turn around and come back... sounds like a good idea, just a little short!!! i may have to go out at lunch for a longer ride. then on the way back, technically i'd be riding to work!!

whatever you do - get out and ride. and don't just make it one day - ride often!!!

ride to work day...

kinda hard for me since i work at home!!! i guess i could ride out the driveway, around the cul-de-sac and back up the driveway... if i did that, would i have to drive back at the end of the day??

on the serious side... i was reading through one of the motorcycle rags and saw an ad for ride to work day. i went to the ride to work day web site to find out more. i found out that ride to work day is always the third wednesday in july, which would make it july 19 this year... taken directly from their web site, the purpose is to demonstrate:

  • the number of motorcyclists to the general public and to politicians

  • that motorcyclists are from all occupations and all walks of life

  • that motorcyclists can reduce traffic and parking congestion in large cities

  • motorcycling is a social good

it all sounds good and i'm sure it helps raise awareness, but do we need a day designated to ride our bikes to work?? again, if i didn't work at home, i would ride to work as often as possible - it wouldn't take a purpose like 'ride to work day' to make me ride in. but maybe there are people out there that don't or normally wouldn't ride to work. my first instinct is to say these people aren't real riders, but that's probably not fair. they have their reasons not to ride every day and they're just as valid as my reasons to ride as often as possible. so this obviously is less an effort to get more people to ride to work and more an effort to raise awareness to non-riders and cage drivers.

anyway, i guess when the day gets closer, i'll have to schedule lunch with some buddies so that i can get out and ride. either that or just hop on the bike, ride down the driveway, around the cul-de-sac and back up the driveway. believe me, if it comes to that, i'll go a lot further!!!

ride on...

national ride to work day

today is national ride to work day... the goals of the effort are:

  1. The number of motorcyclists to the general public and politicians

  2. That motorcyclists are from all occupations and walks of life

  3. That motorcyclists can reduce traffic and parking congestion in large cities

  4. That motorcycles are for transportation as well as recreation

  5. That motorcycling is a social good

my problem is i work from home!!! kind of hard for me to ride my motorcylce to work... plus my wife, as wonderful as she is, wouldn't appreciate me riding the bike in the house...

so i decided to ride to lunch today. had lunch in durham with a some guys i used to work with... it was a nice ride, a little warm but still better than being in a cage... didn't see many bikes on the road - maybe everyone was at work!!!
