smoke out ten – the story…

15 may 2009

it all started friday evening when the guys arrived… actually, it started much earlier with the smoking of the butts. three of them to be exact. not knowing exactly how many people were showing up for the friday night pre-party, we decided to be on the safe side. not a bad thing when it comes to bbq!!!

of course the wife and kids were busy prepping thursday night and friday… wife always does a fantastic job getting the whole spread on and making sure we have enough food and variety for everyone. if it was left to me, we’d be stuck with bbq and beer. it was good to have the kid’s help this year – they really pitched in and did a lot.

DSC_1425friday evening the guys show up. they’re about the only bunch i know that can cram a four hour trip into eight hours!!! but, being the diehard riders they are, they managed to pull it off…

with their arrival, the preparation, the worrying about what we’re forgetting ends and the festivities begin… it’s too late to worry DSC_1426about any of that now. it’s time to sit back, relax and enjoy the stories and lies that are about to be told… some of which maybe shouldn’t be retold but end up coming up in conversation anyway….DSC_1430

the night turned out to be a little calmer than expected… a couple of the guys knocked off early. and it was amazing the others didn’t do something embarrassing to them while they were sleeping. although there was talk about it, no one had the courage to actually pull it off!!!

DSC_1453saturday morning we start our journey with a trip to waffle house. it was a bit more packed than i expected for a saturday morning. i might expact this on sunday, but not saturday. so trying to crowd ten new customers into an already full house wasn’t easy. you can figure out that some of us were finished eating before others even started. but you have to admit the DSC_1454food is good when a chick-fil-a truck is sitting in the parking lot!!!

ironic side note… we usually pick up our own tabs where we’re eating out. for whatever reason, my bro decided to put three of us on the same tab (which i ended up paying for!!!). hmmmm, he may be on to something!!! anyway, the waitress adds up the bill and it comes to seventeen seventy seven. as she sets the bill down, she says someone should play the lottery. i’m thinking the stars are lining up, especially since my favorite number is seven. but, being on the way to the smoke out, i figure i don’t want to hold the trip up hunting a lottery ticket. oh how foolish!! i wake up the next day to find the winning pick three numbers are seven-seven-seven!!! damn it!!!!

DSC_1605 we finish up eating, top off the tanks and head to rockingham for the smoke out. what an awesome ride down. the sky was was overcast when we started, threatening rain. but it didn’t take long for the clouds to clear up and the sun to make an appearance. the temps were perfect. the road to rockingham wasn’t constant interstate… as someone i know would say – phenomenal!!!

we make it to rockingham in a timely manner… now it’s time to enjoy the sights and sounds that can only be the smoke out…

DSC_1563we spent quite a while talking to steve jones from eden jr./sr. high school… it doesn’t take a long conversation with him to realize he’s got a passion for what he does and really enjoys it. steve teaches junior and senior high school students how to built bikes – how cool is that??

they brought two bikes to the smoke out – both of which were incredible… i also spent some DSC_1551time talking to kevin from jaybrake. he was attending the show with steve. because of all the work steve does with the kids, jaybrake donates their parts to steve. nice to see peopleDSC_1562 helping each other out. and i think it really exemplifies what riding a bike is all about…
