lake ride...

here it is, friday night, the snow earlier today stopped and gave way to sleet and freezing rain. the local news is nothing but reporters, out in the streets, talking about the frozen roads, traffic delays and crashes. one station is even reporting from the vehicle, driving around telling everyone to stay off the roads!! go figure.

this weather has me wondering about a motorcycle event i'm supposed to attend tomorrow. and another one sunday. but it also has me thinking about how wonderful the weather was not even a week ago and the ride to the lake.

last sunday, the temps got into the upper fifties so my daughter and i headed up to the lake. she's been itching to ride the loaner bike from my uncle. and i've been waiting for an opportunity to try out the new camera i got for christmas. we opted for a shorter ride, up there and back, instead of taking the longer loop around the lake. so the ride worked out nicely.

although the weather was nice, we opted to bundle up for the ride in the off chance that it might have been colder that it looked. it's always better to start off to warm and peel some layers off than to get colder and have to try to warm up.

after a beautiful ride up to the lake, we decided to make a short stop after we crossed the dam.

we enjoyed the weather, the scenery and the company. then it was time to head home. and time for me to play with the camera. i wanted a point-n-shoot camera for the bike so that i could take some pictures while riding.

crossing the dam...

the camera worked out nicely but i learned a few things, after-the-fact. like there was a firmware update that fixed a few issues. and i needed to update the gps assist file. while it has gps and acquired gps lock, the camera thought i was in china!!!

anyway, i was able to a get few nice pictures and got to spend a great afternoon with my daughter...

first ride of the year...

took my first ride of the year last weekend. in the past, the first ride of the year seems to have been the familiar "lake loop". which usually gets chilly when i get up around the water.

this year was different in a couple ways. with the temps in the 70's, it felt more like april or may instead of january. and this year, instead of heading north around the lake, i headed south to discover sites i never knew existed. i also rode with a few folks i'll probably be riding with a lot more. more to come on that later...

we took off for a leisurely ride not quite knowing where we were heading. what i knew was it was a gorgeous day to be riding and i'd have my son with me - it was going to be a good day. after about thirty minutes twisting and turning through back roads, we pull up to what looks like an old train depot. turns out to be the new hope valley railway.

the railway started in the late 1800s and was operation until 1981. apparently shortly after that, a chapter of the national railway historical society purchased the right-of-way and the yard to set up a museum. today the site is a living museum. what a gem to find.

we'll head back to the railway when the weather warms up for the summer and they open for rides. my son is already planning on one of the halloween rides.

i'm in!!

got a couple e-mails and phone calls this week that firmed up some riding plans...

first, got confirmation that i'm in the cape fear 1000 min-rally this year. i wasn't expecting to get the notification so soon. i didn't waste any time registering. i guess i should make the hotel reservations soon so i get that out of the way - and don't scramble around at the last minute trying to scrounge a room... the biggest downside will be my wife isn't riding with me. i know she helped me tremendously last year. we'll see how i do solo this year...

a day or two later i got a call from harley davidson - i'm back in!!

i also bought my ticket for the smoke out rally this year - event and camping!! been getting a few e-mails from people saying they'll be going and they've already bought their tickets. seems everyone knows this is going to be a good year for the smoke out!!

that's all for now...

here it is, a new year again... time to reflect back on the last year and, more importantly, look forward to this one....

last year was a good one for riding - accomplished some of the rides i wanted, didn't finish others and even threw in some unexpected rides. the first "big" ride of the year was the cape fear 1000 which turned out to be quite an experience. my goal was to finish. successfully. i managed to do that with mentor-ship from two good friends and the support of my wife. the cape fear 1000 is definitely not my wife's type of riding. she knew i wanted to do it and she stepped up. early in the ride, when we had completed the requirements to successfully finish, i told her we could head directly to the finish line and i would be happy. she insisted on completing the route we had initially set. without her support and guidance, i would have never been successful. more than the ride itself i treasure the bonding during the event.

the year also included the smoke chasing grand tour, the smoke out, rolling thunder and general rides around town and the state. unsuccessful was my attempt at the waffle house grand tour (didn't get my goal of a waffle house each month) and another saddle sore 1000 (wasn't so much unsuccessful as just didn't get around to making the ride happen).

unexpected rides included mountainfest, a ride to attend a memorial for a friend and mentor,  and a ride up to erie to pick up a loaner ultra classic. i've enjoyed riding the utlra classic, i like a intercom system and the added wrap around arm rests for the passenger - it's made me feel a lot better about riding around with my son. still need to get my wife out on it before i return it.

this year i'm looking forward to the usual rides: the smoke out, rolling thunder and the smoke chasing grand tour. early this morning, i submitted my application for the cape fear 1000. they've changed the registration process this year and are selecting applicants for the rally. and in the vein of long distance/endurance riding, i'm going to try to mentor a friend in completing a ss1000.

i'm also looking forward to getting involved in a local riding club. i've admired the man who runs the club for many years and the club's main focus is on charity work. motorcycle and charity - fits like a hand and a glove!!

so, lots to look forward to this year... starting with 49317 miles on the clock. i guess another big milestone will be turning 50k on the bike!!
